NEW YORK — The cast was removed from the right hand of New York Mets right fielder Darryl Strawberry Friday, the club said, and he may begin an exercise program in the near-future.
The cast and a pin in Strawberry’s thumb were removed by Met team physician Dr. James Parkes. Monday, Strawberry will be examined by hand specialist Dr. Dick Eaton, who may prescribe a program of exercise.
Strawberry is expected to begin swinging a bat in two weeks, the Mets said.
Strawberry tore ligaments in the hand May 11 while making a diving catch. He underwent surgery to repair inner ulnar collateral ligaments May 13, the day after he was placed on the disabled list.
