“Maurice Andre Plays Trumpet Concertos.” RCA. AAD. This CD is a real bargain: Into one disc, RCA packs seven trumpet concertos: 72 minutes and 38 seconds of Baroque splendor. Here, Andre teams up with several attentive orchestras and conductors in familiar fare by Telemann, Handel, Haydn, etc., plus an unusual entry from this century: Andre Jolivet’s jazzy Concerto No. 2 (1954). As expected, the French trumpeter tosses off every note with casual virtuosity and a clear, ringing tone. The sound throughout is terrific--though this formula music can prove numbing. --MARC SHULGOLD
