General Electric said it paid $78.3 million to settle a civil suit over a never-used nuclear power plant brought against it in 1984 by three Midwestern utilities. The utilities alleged that there were defects in a jointly owned nuclear power plant containment system using GE-supplied equipment. The utilities are Cincinnati Gas & Electric, Dayton Power & Light and Columbus Southern Power. As part of the settlement, GE said it will receive from the utilities two unused non-nuclear turbines originally purchased from GE and currently carried on the utilities’ books at $41 million. The plant in Moscow, Ohio, is now being converted into a coal plant.
