Two longtime Point Loma High School teachers received $5,000 cash prizes Wednesday from the George P. Abel Foundation in honor of their efforts to boost student achievement.
Bennie F. Edens, a 40-year veteran physical education teacher and coach at Point Loma, and Lee Trepanier, a 15-year math teacher and former coach, were honored by San Diego Unified School District Supt. Tom Payzant, Trustee John De Beck and several Point Loma teachers and staff members.
The Abel Awards are given annually to two Point Loma teachers in recognition of the school’s role in educating eight members of the Abel family who attended Point Loma. Nominees are made by faculty and staff members with the two winners chosen by a panel of two previous winners, a student, a school aide and the principal.
