Analysis on Proposed Drunk Driver Law Sought

The Los Angeles City Council on Friday asked the city administrative officer for a financial analysis of a proposed program that would require drunk drivers to pay jail costs and other expenses related to their arrests.
It also asked the city attorney’s office to prepare a draft ordinance on the matter. The actions were recommended last week by the council’s Intergovernmental Relations Committee. If the measure is approved, Los Angeles would join several California cities that charge drunk drivers for the cost of police, fire and paramedic services, and in some cases, jail services. It is estimated that the ordinance could bring in $2.7 million annually.
