In another City Central League game

Hoover 69, Crawford 53--Hoover had a slim 31-30 halftime lead, then outscored Crawford 20-3 in the third quarter. Tony Maxwell led Hoover with 16 points. Kadir Nelson had 19 points for Crawford.

Avocado League

Oceanside 56, San Pasqual 36--Oceanside led just 21-19 at halftime. Larry Tanner led Oceanside (7-11, 3-5) with 13 points and Shad Halbert scored 11. Carl Mathis added 10 points and three fourth-quarter steals. David Durst led San Pasqual with 13 points.

Carlsbad 77, San Marcos 39--Chad Nelson’s 21 points and Toby Tollack’s 19 led fifth-ranked Carlsbad (14-6 8-0). Only five players, including Horace Corey with 18 points, scored for San Marcos (4-13, 1-7).

Rancho Bernardo 59, Ramona 40--Rancho Bernardo center Kirk Hipple, averaging 18 points a game, was held scoreless--going zero for eight from the field--but he had 10 rebounds and five steals. Greg Hanson picked up the slack for eighth-ranked Rancho Bernardo (13-6, 6-2) with a career-high 22 points. Jarrod Bess led Ramona (5-11, 1-7) with 17 points. The Bulldogs were playing without starting forwards Cody Cunningham and Jeff Crosier, who were benched by Coach Al Schaffer.

City Eastern League

Serra 77, Mira Mesa 69--Ryan Cunningham, the county’s second leading scorer, had a game-high 33 points. The Conquistadors (9-5, 2-1) were led by Tony Etheridge (22 points) and Justin Wiebel (25). Mira Mesa is 14-5, 1-2.

City Western League

Kearny 73, La Jolla 63--Third-ranked Kearny (3-0) had four players in double figures, including Damion Victor’s 21 points and Ali Nayab’s 14. For La Jolla (1-2), Tony Maggio and Chris Hayman combined for 29 points.

USDHS 51, Mission Bay 45--Jerry Prior scored 17 points and Josh Merrill had 14 to lead USDHS (3-13, 1-2).

Grossmont 3-A League

Granite Hills 62, Grossmont 53--Clutch free-throw shooting saved the day for Granite Hills. When Grossmont, trailing by 15 points after three quarters, began steadily fouling, Granite Hills responded, making 12 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter. The Eagles were 19 of 23 at the line for the game. Granite Hills’ senior forward Tony Addeo grabbed seven rebounds and led all scorers with 19 points. Guard Bob Allums of Granite Hills scored 11 points. Granite Hills improved to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in league. Grossmont is winless in league play, with an 0-3 record.

Monte Vista 71, Mt. Miguel 60--The three E’s--Marty Ellis, Aaron Elliot and Matt Ehlke--combined for 49 points for second-ranked Monte Vista (18-1, 3-0). Ellis had 19 points and nine rebounds, Elliot and Ehlke had 15 points each and Paul Watson added 17 points. Mt. Miguel scored the first nine points of the game, but Monte Vista went on a 12-2 run and never lost the lead. Marcos Gallardo had four three pointers and 23 points and Reggie Jones had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Mt. Miguel (10-10, 1-2).

Grossmont 2-A League

Valhalla 84, West Hills 57--Tenth-ranked ranked Valhalla (16-6, 3-0) was led by guard Wayne Sippial (17 points, 10 rebounds) sophomore point guard Beau Sager (16 points, six assists) and 6-8 junior David Wiley (15 points, 10 rebounds). Mike Campbell led West Hills (7-10, 2-1) with 24 points.

El Cajon Valley 54, Santana 47--El Cajon Valley (3-11, 1-2) made 22 of 27 free throws and beat Santana. The Braves made only four field goals in the first half, none in the first quarte, but led 25-19 at halftime on the strength of a 14 of 16 performance from the line. Mike Harris made four three-point baskets and led ECV with 22 points, and Mike Stadler had 16 and Marc Boykins 13. Mark Bennett led Santan with 11 points.

Metro Conference

Sweetwater 37, Montgomery 32--Montgomery had a 30-25 lead after three quarters, but blew it when Sweetwater outscored them 12-2 in the fourth quarter. Lynne Smith of Sweetwater led all scorers with 17 points in the Metro Conference game. Sweetwater improved to 7-1 in league games, while Montgomery dropped to 4-14 overall, and 1-7 in league. Sweetwater senior Guillermo Sanchez hit two three-point baskets, and finished with eight points. Junior center Ray Lozano had 15 points for Montgomery.

Chula Vista 59, Southwest 44--Trailing 44-38 early in the fourth quarter, Chula Vista reeled off 21 unanswered points to beat the Raiders at Chula Vista. Senior guard Lamar Bailey led the Spartans (13-8, 6-2) with 16 points and six assists, and sophomore forward Alberto Marzan pitched in with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Southwest (8-10, 4-4) was held to just two points in the fourth quarter. Leo Vargas scored 18 points and Tony Diaz had nine for the Raiders. Southwest held the county’s leading scorer, Chula Vista’s junior guard Jerome Green, to just nine points.

Palomar League

Fallbrook 63, Poway 45--Fallbrook’s leading scorer, Chris Miller (23 points) fouled out with 6:03 remaining and clinging to a 43-40 lead, but fourth-ranked Poway (16-6, 5-3) lost its shooting touch while the Warriors’ Chad Lemons scored five of his 13 points and Steve Pack scored all eight of his points. Lemons, who was 0 for 7 shooting in the first meeting, was 4 for 7 from the field. Kyle Milling and Andy Davis scored 11 apiece for Poway. Fallbrook is 14-6, 4-4.

Torrey Pines 77, San Dieguito 35--In protest to its future move to the Avocado League, Torrey Pines fans threw avocados on the court, which was the highlight of the night at San Dieguito. The Mustangs were held to 2 points in the first quarter, and didn’t score those until 1:45 remained in the period.

Scot Pollard (16 points, nine rebounds) and USC-bound John Allred (14 points) led the top-ranked Falcons. Torrey Pines outscored San Dieguito, 15-0 in the first quarter.

Vista 87, Orange Glen 41--After coming off an emotional 81-79 loss to top-ranked Torrey Pines, Vista coach Greg Lanthier told his team to not take winless Orange Glen lightly. They didn’t. The sixth-ranked Panthers (13-6, 7-1) hit four three-point baskets and bolted to a 20-0 lead just 3:38 into the game and coasted from there. Shane Jager led Vista wtih 25 points. Nils Michals scored 13 and Jason Barnes had 11. Orange Glen (2-16, 0-8) played without point guard Brian Morsch (19.5 p.p.g.) and had trouble getting the ball upcourt against the Panther pressure.

Mt. Carmel 73, Rancho Buena Vista 59--Jason Sammons scored 15 of his 21 points, most on short baseline jumpers, in the third quarter as ninth-ranked Mt. Carmel pulled away from RBV (8-13, 1-7). Teammate Scott Schoenwald also had 21 points and Chris Goode scord 13 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Sundevils (12-7, 5-3).

Abe Ajlouny, Mike Ross and Mike Micknivs scored 11 points apiece for the Longhorns.

Nonleague

Helix 60, El Capitan 57--Bryan Hawkins kept El Capitan (8-12) in the game with 28 points, while three starters--Justin Shands, Chris Wilson and Ben Kindreich--fouled out and another--Dillon Smith--spend a quarter on the bench with an injured ankle. Lloyd Lake led Helix (13-5, 3-1) with 26 points and Kevin Hagan added 13 points.

Morse 63, Madison 56--Maurice Vickers scored 21 points and Edmund Jackson scored 16 to lift Morse (12-4). Matt Baker (20 points) and Shane Lantz (19) led Madison (11-9).

University City 54, Christian 53--Christian’s Pat Keough hit a three-pointer from near midcourt at the buzzer to make it close. Barry Waits led UC (10-7) with 17 points. Jeremy Garrett led Christian (15-4) with 19 points.
