NORTHRIDGE — Christ College Irvine, a late addition to Cal State Northridge’s baseball schedule after Coach Scott Sarver insisted his Eagles replace another team that had canceled, defeated the Matadors, 5-2, Friday in the season opener for both teams. Northridge is ranked 11th in Division I.
Mike Adams allowed four hits, three of them singles. The senior right-hander, who was player of the year in the NAIA District 3 last season, allowed only five balls to be hit out of the infield.
The Eagles’ hitting standouts were Lonnie Zimmerman (three for five, two runs batted in), Rodney Nelson (two RBIs) and Jim Valcek (three for five, two runs).
“We had a couple of chink hits, but we executed, stole a base, put the ball in play and played catch,” Sarver said.
