Eric Pauley had a personal-best 23 points and 12 rebounds and helped key a 17-4 run Monday night that broke open a tight Big Eight game and carried No. 3 Kansas to an 84-65 victory over Oklahoma at Lawrence, Kan.
Pauley, a 6-foot-10 junior, scored eight points in the five-minute run and Adonis Jordan, a 5-11 point guard, scored six as Kansas, 21-3 overall and 9-2 in the conference, won its 15th consecutive Big Eight game at home and swept their two-game series with the Sooners for the first time since 1986.
Oklahoma (17-7, 5-6) pulled back to 52-50 on Damon Patterson’s basket. But then Pauley made a basket and Jordan hit a three-pointer to put the Jayhawks in control.
Jordan finished with 22 points, and Rex Walters, who had been battling a shooting slump, had 18.
South Florida 81, No. 15 Tulane 76--Bobby Russell made up for a disappointment at home with a three-pointer on the road with 10 seconds to play that broke a 76-76 tie in a Metro Conference upset over Tulane (19-4, 7-2) at New Orleans.
Fred Lewis led South Florida (17-8, 5-5) with 22 points.
Russell missed a three-point shot at Tampa that would have won that game in regulation when the teams met Feb. 6. Tulane went on to win, 78-70, in overtime.
Monday night, Russell’s three-pointer broke the late tie, and Radenko Dobras hit two free throws with four seconds left.
No. 20 St. John’s 72, Providence 68--St. John’s, which had missed 16 of its first 40 free throws, made all six it attempted in the final 2:55 of overtime at Providence, R.I., and the Redmen (17-7, 11-5) won their seventh in a row in a Big East game.
Providence (13-15, 5-11) tied the score, 62-62, with three seconds to play in regulation on a rebound basket by Trent Forbes.
