WORLD IN BRIEF : MALAWI : Leader Appeals for Calm After Rioting

Several hundred striking tobacco workers clashed with police in Malawi’s capital, as unrest continued in the wake of the bloodiest anti-government riots since independence. President H. Kamuzu Banda pleaded for calm. Riots broke out Wednesday in the southern city of Blantyre and spread Thursday to Lilongwe, 185 miles to the north. Hospital officials and diplomats reported 38 deaths and hundreds of injuries. State radio put the death toll at 36.
