Joining a national student action, about 25 students at Occidental College are protesting the treatment of Haitian refugees held at a U.S. naval base in the Caribbean.
Students have participated in a weeklong symbolic fast and have collected more than 400 signatures asking President Clinton to admit Haitians being held at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba into the United States.
They have also sent more than 250 postcards and are conducting a phone campaign, calling U.S. Atty. Gen. Janet Reno, Sens. Diane Feinstein and Barbara Boxer (D-California), and Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Los Angeles).
