Great to see the space devoted to New Zealand wineries (“Chateau Kiwi,” Sept. 26).
I had the pleasure of visiting the Hawke Bay area a year ago in March, and in addition to other wineries, much enjoyed the drive through that area. One Saturday morning as we were hurrying to Napier to shop (the stores close at noon on Saturday), we came upon a typical New Zealand traffic jam--a flock of sheep being herded to greener paddocks.
Explanation for Napier’s charming Art Deco buildings? The town suffered a lot of damage in a horrendous earthquake in the 1930s. Its rebuilding reflected the style of that period.
Incidentally, Gisborne is a Sister City to our Palm Desert.
I’ll be spending the coming months in that area again, and your article is definitely an inspiration for more wine tours!
