WOODLAND HILLS : Grant to Aid Single Parents at Pierce

Pierce College has received a $24,000 state grant to help students who are single parents pay for books, child care and transportation to school, a college representative said Thursday.
The grant, which is the first awarded to the community college, will be divided among about 30 full-time students during the spring semester, said Joy McCaslin, associate dean of student services.
To qualify, students must be 18 or older, receiving government assistance and have a preschool-age child, McCaslin said.
“This money lets us offer students on welfare a chance to go to school and get some retraining and get off welfare,” she said.
McCaslin, who heads the college’s Extended Opportunity Program and Services for low-income and disadvantaged students, said there is a particular need among single parents.
