Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Giuliani May Seek to Ban Police Gun Sales

New York mayor-elect Rudolph W. Giuliani indicated he would seek to bar New York City police from selling their revolvers in the civilian market as the department converts to semiautomatic pistols. Newsday had reported that scores of former police revolvers sold by departments across the nation to offset the cost of new pistols have since been used in crimes. Giuliani said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that the city police department “shouldn’t have commerce in guns.” Newsday disclosed that, in the past fiscal year, 166 former police handguns were involved in criminal investigations, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which traced ownership at the request of law enforcement agencies.
