Beaches: Nude Sunbathing at Cove

Regarding the article “Nude Beach Unveils Political Dispute” (July 14), nude sunbathing is freedom from and a welcome antidote for the stress of today’s hectic society and should be allowed to continue in Smuggler’s Cove (Sacred Beach) in Rancho Palos Verdes.
No national or state laws ban naturism (nudity) and local ordinances should not be enacted to outlaw this activity in appropriate places. Smuggler’s Cove, with its hazardous, steep access to the isolated beach, is over a mile distant from the nearest residence and is the ideal appropriate place. Risk of offending anyone here is minimal.
It would be most unfair to deny the many hundreds who enjoy nude sunbathing and swimming here the use of the only nude beach in Los Angeles County because of a minuscule minority who may have acted improperly as alleged.
Most of our highways and streets are posted with speed limit signs. If excess speeding is observed, you don’t close the streets, you arrest the speeders. If improper behavior is observed on any beach, you don’t close the beach, you stop the participants.
Designating Smuggler’s Cove clothing optional and the posting of appropriate rules for beach users is the course to take.
