Chandler Remembered as One of the Best
While covering sports in the early 1960s for the Daily News in Whittier, I had the pleasure of watching Bobby Chandler a number of times when he starred at Whittier High. Even then, Bobby was such a talented performer that legendary El Rancho High Coach Ernie Johnson once told me Bobby was the greatest athlete he’d ever coached against.
Bobby starred in the inaugural Kiwanis 605 All-Star football game at Cerritos College, and I, a lifelong UCLA fan, was thrilled to watch him earn player-of-the-game honors when USC defeated Michigan in the 1970 Rose Bowl.
My condolences to Bobby’s family and friends. His loss is a great one for us all. He will be missed.
