Aiding La Fenice: The voices of Placido Domingo and other opera stars--including Mirella Freni, Victoria de los Angeles, Franco Corelli and Beniamino Gigli and Maria Callas, the latter both deceased--are featured on a CD designed to raise funds to help rebuild Venice’s historic La Fenice opera house, which burned down last month. The CD--due out April 23 on Angel records--features arias that debuted at La Fenice, including music from Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra” and “La Traviata.” Speaking of Domingo: Sunday’s Washington Opera gala welcoming the tenor as the company’s new artistic director raised $2.6 million--a healthy portion of the opera’s $15.3-million 1996-97 budget.
