Speech Team Talks Its Way to Championship

Orange Coast College’s speech team reclaimed its title, which it lost in 1992, at the California College Speech and Debate Tournament last weekend.
Norm Fricker, coach of OCC’s speech and debate team, said the team’s superior depth gave them the victory at the championship tournament in Sacramento.
“It was a total team effort. Everyone on our 22-person roster contributed,” Fricker said. “Many of our people won multiple awards, and that was the real difference.”
OCC brought home a total of 39 medals--10 gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze--from the tournament.
Mario Tonel of Costa Mesa led the OCC team, winning gold medals in extemporaneous speaking, impromptu speaking and team debate.
The team will compete for the national title--which it has won five times--next month in Chicago.
