Los Angeles has gained 12 more charter school slots under legislation carried by state Sen. Tom Hayden (D-Los Angeles).
The law, signed by the governor this week, raises the 10-school cap originally set for charters, which are public schools allowed to operate free of many local and state regulations.
Los Angeles has seven charter campuses, but one of them--the Palisades Complex--involves seven schools. About 40,000 students are enrolled in 113 charter schools statewide.
