Bonds to Help Fund 29 New Classrooms

One month after Culver City voters overwhelmingly passed a $40-million school bond, district officials are pushing ahead with a plan to build 29 new classrooms at four elementary schools by Sept. 1.
District officials said the $5-million project, funded partially by the bonds, will allow them to accommodate increasing enrollment and to continue participating in statewide efforts to reduce class size. The money is being provided through Measure T, a school bond designed to repair and renovate the district’s facilities, officials said.
“Without Measure T, we would probably be looking at leasing some more buildings and waiting until we could go back out there and try to get it passed again,” said James Crawford, assistant superintendent of business services. “This has definitely pushed it forward.”
Parents and neighbors are meeting at each school this week to discuss the plans, and the school board is expected to approve a preliminary budget for the new classrooms at its Tuesday meeting. Construction is scheduled to start May 1.
