The Jim Murray Trophy, commemorating The Times’ late sports columnist, who died Aug. 16, will be presented to the winner of Saturday’s USC-UCLA game. Times Publisher Mark Willes will make the presentation to the winning coach on the field immediately after the game.
In addition to the traveling trophy, a special grant of $1,000 from The Times will go to the winning school’s eye institute, either the Jules Stein at UCLA or the Doheny Institute at USC. For nearly the last 20 years of his life, Murray had severe eye problems, having lost sight totally in one eye because of a detached retina and operating, eventually, with only partial vision in the other.
