Prop. 227

* The op-ed pieces on Prop. 227 on Oct. 15 demonstrate the true weakness of the proposition. It is vague, unrealistic and more a result of a political agenda than a careful consideration of how children learn. Like many initiatives, the proposition took a legitimate concern and proposed an extreme and unworkable remedy. A frustrated electorate faced a Hobson’s choice. As a result, we have confusion as educators try to figure out this strange law.

As a teacher in a multilingual school, I have seen several models applied successfully. Teaching is best when educators have the flexibility to select from a variety of models according to the needs of the students and resources available. Prop. 227 has seriously limited that professional judgment and contributes nothing to the education of limited-English students.
