Chapman Falls to Claremont

Chapman couldn’t overcome an early shooting slump and lost to Claremont, 71-60, in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday at Chapman.
The Panthers (7-3) missed 17 of their first 20 shots and trailed by as many as 13 points during the first half. Claremont made 18 of 27 shots in the opening half and held a 42-20 lead at the break.
Chapman was able to tie the score twice in the closing minutes, but Claremont (2-5) closed the game with an 11-0 run.
Nate Strange scored 20 points and Tim Werdel 10 for the Panthers, who shot 35% from the field in the game.
Bob Donlan and Jason Nicholas each scored 22 points for the Stags, who shot 52% from the floor.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Cal Lutheran 84, Concordia 59--Cal Lutheran ended a six-game losing streak against Concordia after building a 19-point halftime lead at home. Priscilla Bendik scored 21 points and Taryn Commins had 17 for the Eagles (7-1).
UC San Diego 70, Vanguard 53--Kelly Boeke scored 13 points and Laura Lee added 11 for visiting Vanguard (6-2). Robbin Dittenbir had 12 rebounds for the Lions.
