Tiampo’s Late Goal Sparks Irvine to Wild-Card Victory

Kim Tiampo scored on an assist from Erica Vincent with eight minutes to play as Irvine beat Santa Ana, 1-0, in a Southern Section Division I girls’ wild-card playoff game Wednesday at Santa Ana.
Lauren O’Grady had four saves in recording the shutout. The Vaqueros (9-11-2) will play top-seeded Capistrano Valley on Saturday.
In another Division I wild-card game:
Marina 7, Westminster 1--Laura Riegler scored two goals for host Marina. Chelsea Davis, Ashley O’Brien, Erin Droeger, Jessica Chase and Jennifer Kindschi also had goals for the Vikings (18-5-3). Marina plays fourth-seeded Aliso Niguel in the first round on Saturday. Westminster finishes 10-5-3.
In Division II:
Mission Viejo 7, Loara 1--Jen Thais had two goals for Mission Viejo (17-6-1). Nicole McCarty had one save, then scored a goal in the second half for the Diablos, who will play at La Mirada on Saturday.
In Division III:
Garden Grove 4, La Puente 1--Goals by Erin Griswold and Anna Prince opened a 2-0 first-half lead for the Argonauts (16-4-2). Garden Grove, which had 25 shots on goal, put the game away with second-half goals by Mattye Morton and Elya Ortiz. El Modena will host Garden Grove on Saturday.
Sonora 3, Elsinore 0--Sarah Gibson scored two unassisted goals in the first half and assisted on a second-half goal by Amber Plumlee to lead host Sonora (10-10-2), which will next play Glendora St. Lucy’s.
Valencia 4, Palm Desert 1--Missy Loera scored two goals for host Valencia (14-4-2), which plays at Ocean View on Saturday.
West Covina South Hills 5, Santiago 0--Visiting Santiago was no match for South Hills, which faces Rosemead in the first round.
In Southern Section Division I boys’ soccer wild-card games:
Westminster 4, Santa Ana Valley 2--Lucio Martinez scored the winner seven minutes into the first overtime, his second goal of the game.
Aaron Barragan, who scored both goals for the Falcons (14-9-1), put the game into overtime with a goal in the last minute of regulation.
Westminster (14-8-1) will play at Santa Monica, the second-seeded team, on Friday in a first-round game.
Century 3, Dana Hills 1--Rick Ekstein gave Dana Hills a 1-0 lead in the third minute, but Century answered with first-half goals from Alan Morita and Gus Sandoval.
Andres Lopez scored Century’s third goal on a penalty kick in the second half.
Century (10-7-3) will play at Paramount on Friday.
El Toro 1, Saddleback 0--Freshman Doug Franco scored off an assist from Nader Jazayeri 15 minutes into the game at El Toro (12-5-5).
Cameron Rossi had six saves in posting the shutout for the Chargers.
El Toro will play at Long Beach Millikan on Friday.
Esperanza 6, Montebello 0--Mike O’Donnel scored three first-half goals for host Esperanza (17-6-3).
Luke Sargent made two saves for Esperanza, which will play at Chino in a first-round game on Friday.
In Division II:
Newport Harbor 5, Anaheim 1--Trey Meek scored two goals and assisted on another by Riley Madigan for the host Sailors (8-7-5). Newport Harbor plays at El Dorado on Friday.
In Division III:
Pacifica 3, Buena Park 1--Blake Smith scored all three goals to lead host Pacifica (15-6-3).
Goalkeeper Ian Stirling had eight saves for the Mariners.
Buena Park ends the season at 8-11-4.
Top-seeded Santa Margarita will host Pacifica on Friday in a first-round game.
In Division V:
Avalon 5, Fairmont 1--Stephen Park gave Fairmont a 1-0 lead before Avalon scored five goals. Fairmont ends the season at 9-5-1.
