Courtney Fossatti drove in a run in the first inning and pitched a one-hit shutout Thursday as third-seeded Foothill defeated Capistrano Valley, 2-0, in the first round of the Southern Section Division I softball playoffs.
Fossatti (20-1) struck out seven and gave up only a fourth-inning single to the Cougars’ Christie Shedd.
Capistrano Valley, the third-place team from the South Coast League, finished 14-14.
Fossatti got the only run she needed when Caitlin Lowe opened the first inning with a single, stole second and third bases, and scored on Fossatti’s squeeze bunt.
Tiffany Haas and Kristen Mann, who had a run-scoring triple in the sixth inning, had two hits apiece.
Foothill (29-2) will play Tuesday against the winner of today’s Palos Verdes Peninsula-Lakewood game.
In Division V:
Orange Lutheran 13, Santa Monica St. Monica 0 (4, mercy)--The Lancers scored nine runs in the first inning and four in the second. Jessica Edwards had a perfect game going into the fourth inning and finished with a one-hitter, striking out 11 batters for Orange Lutheran (22-6-1).
