Bush’s School Plans

* Re “Definite Choices on Schools,” editorial, Sept. 25: As a close follower of and participant in the precollegiate education battle underway in California, and as a lifelong registered Democrat, I applaud your conclusion that, on education, “Bush’s determined focus, even if imperfect on some of the specifics, is preferable to Gore’s ‘something for everyone’ promises.”

Beyond the superficial that might show up in a stump speech, Lynne Cheney has been a tireless worker for education in directions that are wise and realistic, and the national team of education advisors that Gov. George W. Bush has assembled is nothing short of superb.

The editorial scores a flat-out minus-100% for praising dumb ideas put forth by Bush. In particular, his silly notion that withholding federal funds from the poorest schools, giving the parents vouchers for a paltry $1,500 to shop for a private school, would somehow benefit the poor kids. Hey, George: Ain’t no private school a poor kid can go to for less than $8,000. This half-baked “program” will end up dumping the neediest kids on the street or in even worse schools, and we know what happens to them then, especially in Texas.
