From Times Wire Reports
Eight paramilitary police officers accused of murdering 57 young men during election violence in October appeared before a military tribunal on the edge of Ivory Coast’s main city, Abidjan.
The officers played a vital role in backing President Laurent Gbagbo and suppressing riots after his victory, as supporters of excluded former Prime Minister Alassane Ouattara demanded a fresh election to allow him to take part. Most of the 57 killed are thought to be from Ouattara’s Muslim north.
