Evan Corey, a senior at L.A. Baptist in North Hills, has pulled off the rare achievement of earning a college scholarship without playing high school sports.
Corey has committed to play soccer for UCLA. He received attention from college recruiters while playing for the West Valley Samba club team and in a men’s league based in the San Fernando Valley. He’s a forward who picked the Bruins over California. He plans to play for L.A. Baptist this season....
Brandon Rohe, a 6-foot-4 basketball player from Santa Margarita, has committed to Santa Clara....
John Hurford, an outfielder at Oak Park, has committed to San Francisco. Hurford missed much of last season because of a broken foot but made a positive impression in summer ball. Third baseman Tim Murphy of Burbank Burroughs has committed to The Master’s College. Pitcher Greg Acheatel of Woodland Hills El Camino Real visited California last week and takes a trip to UC Santa Barbara this week....

Emily Vince of Palos Verdes Peninsula, who finished fourth in the state Division I cross-country final last year, has taken trips to Princeton, Yale and Stanford.
