Environmental Groups Plan Bay Cleanup Today
- Share via
Several environmental groups, community leaders and students will clean up beleaguered Newport Bay today. The event is being sponsored by Assemblyman John Campbell (R-Irvine), the California Public Interest Research Group, Defend the Bay, the UC Irvine Volunteer Center and the Sierra Club.
The northern portion of Upper Newport Bay has been off-limits to swimmers and shellfish harvesting since 1974. Other portions of the bay have been restricted in recent years because of high bacteria counts. The bay is on the nation’s list of severely impaired bodies of water.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. with speeches at the Balboa Pier, followed by a cleanup from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
