Runoff Taints Poche Beach, Study Finds

Urban runoff causes the bacterial contamination at Poche Beach on the border of Dana Point and San Clemente, according to a Surfrider Foundation report released this week.
The environmental group mapped potential sources of contamination in the watershed and sampled water throughout the drainage area.
“Good old-fashioned urban runoff from all of our activities appears to be the culprit behind our beach closures at Poche,” said Mark Cousineau of the foundation’s San Clemente chapter. Surfrider’s recommendations include diverting runoff to a treatment plant, studying the sources of runoff and adding street sweeping, storm drain filters and other fixes.
