Samuel Rabinove, 79; Legal Director of American Jewish Group

Samuel Rabinove, 79, longtime legal director for the American Jewish Committee, died June 9 in White Plains, N.Y., of complications from pneumonia.
Born in the Bronx, N.Y., Rabinove earned his bachelor’s degree in social science from City College of New York.
He served in the Navy during World War II as a gunnery and navigation officer. After the war, he earned his law degree from Columbia law school.
A strong advocate of religious pluralism, Rabinove was appointed National Legal Director of the American Jewish Committee in 1966 and held the post until his retirement in 1997.
Rabinove was responsible for the organization’s multifaceted civil rights and civil liberties activities, including the filing of precedent-setting briefs.
