Thousands at Rally Urge President to Quit

About 25,000 people rallied against President Robert Kocharyan in Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, urging him to resign after he failed to win 50% of the vote, a requirement for outright victory.
Many protesters backed complaints of ballot-rigging. European observers also said the vote was “flawed” because of ballot-stuffing and intimidation.
Stepan Demirchyan is to face Kocharyan in a March 5 runoff. Official figures showed Kocharyan with 49.8% of the vote and Demirchyan with 28.3%.
