Stop Spam the Easy Way: Just Say No

“Bill Would Ban Spam E-Mail in California” (Feb. 18) quotes Jared Blank: “Spam is not going to be stopped through legislation.” What motivates spammers are potential sales. Want to stop spamming? Refuse to purchase any of the products or services you have been spammed with. No sales and eventually no spam.

Thanks to state Sen. Deborah Bowen’s (D-Marina del Rey) bill I’m going to make a fortune through spam -- by receiving it, that is. Every day I receive over 100 spam e-mails. If I sue for $500 per violation, I can make $50,000 in just one day and $350,000 in a week; I’ll become a millionaire within a month. Wait a minute, that sounds like the subject of an e-mail I just received.

No matter how difficult it is to enforce, any law is better than nothing to combat junk e-mails, junk mail and junk calls -- the scum of modern commerce. I hope the law would cover the despicable practice of MSN Hotmail, which tags a spam onto the Internet messages its subscribers send, selling MSN services and products without the senders’ knowledge, so that e-mail sent through MSN Hotmail becomes junk e-mail. MSN products most spammed, ironically, are “advanced junk mail protection” and “MSN 8 Spam Protection.” I encourage MSN subscribers to protest against this most unethical practice.
