Not everyone’s cup of activism

I could imagine Neil Young grinning when he read “the music is filled with such character and dimension that it feels sensual enough for a dance hall and inspiring enough for a cathedral. Young’s voice conveys the innocence of youth and the authority that comes with age” (“The Voices of Greendale,” by Robert Hilburn, July 24).

That was beautiful, man! When I read that I said, yeah!

I sadly missed one of my favorites that Hilburn wrote he played on Tuesday: “Rockin’ in the Free World.” But, we heard “Cinnamon Girl.” I was blown away, inspired, activated to make a difference. He definitely triumphed.

I just read Hilburn’s review of the concert and it was so off base that I am compelled to comment. The performance was “unbearably cheesy,” as Hilburn stated it could have been. I purchased tickets for a Neil Young concert, not some high school-quality musical. After an hour and 40 minutes of being “hit over the head” with the social/political commentary story line, enough already. The only reason people stood up at the end was because they were happy that it was over.
