Counsell Will Have Surgery on Thumb

Arizona Diamondback infielder Craig Counsell will have surgery on his injured right thumb Thursday and will be sidelined at least 10 weeks.
An MRI exam Wednesday showed a torn ligament.
“It’s already happened, so now we’ve got to fix it and move forward with it,” Counsell said. “It is what it is -- bad luck, whatever.”
Counsell, who sat out the final two months of last season because of a neck injury that required fusion surgery, dislocated his thumb in the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s 6-5 victory over the Phillies when he slid into second base.
The team recalled infielder Alex Cintron from triple-A Tucson, where he was leading the Pacific Coast League with a .393 batting average. Cintron, who spent six weeks with the Diamondbacks last season, was in the lineup at shortstop Wednesday.

New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter went one for three in his first minor league rehabilitation game since dislocating a shoulder on opening day.
He is slated to play five games for double-A Trenton and hopes to rejoin the Yankees on Tuesday.
