Spielberg’s latest to open Venice fest

VENICE, Italy — Steven Spielberg’s “The Terminal,” starring Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones, will open this year’s Venice Film Festival.
Festival director Marco Muller confirmed Thursday that “The Terminal” would open the Sept. 1-11 event, but didn’t say what other films would be presented.
The film tells the story of an Eastern European immigrant, played by Hanks, who becomes a man without a country, stuck in the arrivals area at a New York City airport after a coup in his homeland leaves him without a valid passport. It will be shown out of competition.
Spielberg received a lifetime award at the festival in 1993, and his World War II epic, “Saving Private Ryan,” opened the festival in 1998.
“The Terminal” opens in U.S. theaters in June.
