3 Prisoners Escape From Jail in Castaic

Three inmates escaped from a county jail in Castaic on Tuesday while working in a laundry, authorities said.
The men, ages 18 to 25, were not believed to be armed. A head count about 7 p.m. determined that the three were missing from Pitchess Detention Center, about 40 miles north of Los Angeles, said Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Lorenzi.
The men had convictions for burglary and possession of controlled substances, Lorenzi said.
About 50 sheriff’s personnel were searching for the men, and message boards on the Golden State Freeway warned drivers not to pick up hitchhikers.
Scores of deputies surrounded an apartment complex in Santa Clarita near the freeway and San Fernando Road when a manager reported that someone kicked open a door. The escapees were not there.
