Seattle’s Allen to have season-ending surgery

From the Associated Press

Seattle SuperSonics guard Ray Allen will miss the rest of the regular season after deciding to undergo surgery for bone spurs in his left ankle.

“It makes sense for Ray to go forward and have the surgery,” General Manager Rick Sund said on Sunday. “He’s been playing with pain for some time now, and all parties involved agree that this is what is best for Ray in the long run.”

Allen missed the last two games as the pain and discomfort in the ankle increased, and came to Los Angeles on Friday to meet with Dr. Richard Ferkel, a noted specialist on ankle injuries. Allen has been bothered by the bone spurs since early February, but didn’t reveal until March 1 that the ankle was a problem.

Allen, who missed nine games in December because of a bone bruise in his right foot, averaged a career-high 26.4 points in 55 games this season.

Washington point guard Gilbert Arenas was admonished by the NBA for making $10 bets with fans during the Wizards’ loss at Portland on Wednesday.

“We spoke to Gilbert and explained the issue to him,” NBA spokesman John Acunto said. “And he assured us he wouldn’t do anything like this again.”

Arenas made the bets as he bantered with fans throughout the Wizards’ 100-98 loss. He was booed during pregame introductions and whenever he touched the ball because he had promised to score 50 points against the Trail Blazers.

After the game, Arenas said he bet a fan $10 that he would make the game-winning basket. He missed badly -- throwing up a shot that fell short of the rim -- and finished with only 19 points.

Arenas later elaborated on his nba.com blog, saying that he made $10 bets with two fans during the game and had obtained their e-mail addresses so that he could pay them off. The NBA since has removed the references to the bets from the blog.
