Northrop awarded Army plane deal

Northrop Grumman Corp., the third-largest U.S. defense contractor, won a deal valued at as much as $462 million to modernize the U.S. Army’s fleet of RC-12 Guardrail spy planes.

The five-year contract with a five-year option would extend the aircraft’s operational life beyond 2020, Century City-based Northrop said.

The Army has used Guardrail aircraft for more than 30 years to conduct surveillance and reconnaissance.
