Fred Thompson enters the race

Re “An in-law-made man,” Sept. 6

As the father of two young adult men, I guess I should just tell them to marry well, sit back and let their marriage and new family give them “ambition” and “an education, a profession, a political party,” just as Fred Thompson received.

I’ve always thought individuals must first define their personal values and convictions, then focus and put in the consistent, successful hard work necessary to achieve whatever goals they choose. Now I know it can work by merely having a well-meaning in-law tell you it’s time to “make something of yourself, because you’ve got responsibilities.” Let’s be sure not to give Thompson any credit for accomplishing what few in this country ever have, and for having a heart and desire to serve his fellow Americans.

The article’s sub-headline, “Thompson lacked drive, then he married into it,” is derogatory and misleading. The article is based on the 40-year-old memories of relatives, friends and acquaintances. How could the Lindseys have doubted “Thompson’s work ethic” when he was only a high school student? Were the Lindseys the “most important audience he ever won over,” as The Times states? There are many more insinuations, too numerous to list. The entire article is filled with adverbs and adjectives that are opinions, not facts.

Thompson enters the presidential race promising to keep another Clinton out of the White House. There’s a message designed to resonate with the electorate after the last seven years. Imagine another eight years of economic prosperity, budget surpluses, civil liberties and the respect of the world. Another eight years of a competent Federal Emergency Management Agency, under-used veterans hospitals without roaches or endless streams of seriously wounded soldiers, the city of New Orleans, and the biggest lie to come out of Washington concerning a soiled dress! Save us, Fred!
