at Detroit 5, Toronto 4: Magglio Ordonez hit a two-run single with two out in the ninth inning, capping a four-run rally that put the Tigers 3 1/2 games behind idle New York in the American League wild-card race. Toronto ace Roy Halladay was one out away from his eighth complete game.
Minnesota 4, at Kansas City 2: Jason Kubel and Justin Morneau each drove in two runs and Boof Bonser (7-12), who was 1-10 in his previous 15 starts, held the Royals to two runs and five hits in five innings. The Royals, who stranded 10 runners, have lost six games in a row.
Oakland 9, at Seattle 3: Kurt Suzuki hit the first grand slam of his career, Dan Johnson also hit one and Joe Blanton (13-9) gave up two runs and eight hits over seven innings to win for the fifth time in six decisions. Jose Guillen hit his 20th home run in the eighth inning to cut the Mariners’ deficit to 5-3. Seattle lost for the 14th time in 16 games.
Cleveland 6, at Chicago 2: Rookie Asdrubal Cabrera hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the seventh inning and Fausto Carmona pitched seven solid innings for the Indians, who have won 14 of their last 17 games and hold a six-game lead over second-place Detroit in the AL Central.
Tampa Bay 1, at Boston 0: Scott Kazmir struck out 10 and allowed only two runners to reach second base in seven innings, and Josh Wilson drove in the run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
