Titans give Fisher a contract extension

From the Associated Press

Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams said more than a year ago that Coach Jeff Fisher wouldn’t be going anywhere. On Monday, the NFL’s longest-tenured coach with his current team said he hopes to finish his career in Tennessee.

Adams picked up the 2007 option on Fisher’s contract at the end of last season when the Titans rallied from an 0-5 start to finish 8-8, and an extension had been expected since then. Fisher said they finally worked out the last details last week.

“Never at any time was I of the opinion it was not going to get done,” Fisher said. “What was most important to me was the team and the players and winning games.”

The deal through 2011 is thought to be worth $5.5 million to $6 million per year.

Fisher is in his 13th season with the franchise that used to be the Houston Oilers. Promoted from defensive coordinator to interim head coach in November 1994, he was given the title after that season ended.

The NFL may soon find out if video spying by the New England Patriots went beyond one game, and the team itself may provide the evidence.

Coach Bill Belichick said he would comply with the NFL’s request to provide any notes or tapes made from video recordings similar to those that drew a stiff penalty against him and the team.

“Of course,” he said.

Beyond that, Belichick declined to comment when asked about Commissioner Roger Goodell’s request.

Asked if there are more videos, Belichick, in his eighth year as coach of the Patriots, shifted the discussion to Sunday’s home game against Buffalo.

“I think that right now we need to spend our time watching a lot of video on Buffalo,” he said.

Titans assistant coach Chuck Cecil was arrested and charged with drunk driving and violating Tennessee’s implied consent law by refusing a blood-alcohol test the night before the team’s 22-20 loss to Indianapolis.

Nashville police stopped Cecil for driving 42 mph in a 30-mph zone Saturday night. Officer James T. Cole Jr. wrote that Cecil smelled of alcohol with red, watery eyes.

Cecil appeared before a night court officer just before midnight and was on the sideline Sunday with the Titans during the loss to the Colts.

Kevin Everett is showing some movement in both hands and greater strength in his leg muscles, further positive signs for the Buffalo Bills tight end after a life-threatening spinal-cord injury.

“Kevin Everett remains medically stable in the intensive care unit, and continues to make daily improvement in his neurological status,” Bills doctor John Marzo said.

New York Giants rookie receiver Steve Smith probably will sit out at least two games because of a broken shoulder blade. Smith, a second-round pick from USC, was hurt after catching a 10-yard pass in the first quarter of the Giants’ 35-13 loss Sunday to the Green Bay Packers.

The Baltimore Ravens expect to have injured quarterback Steve McNair back for Sunday’s game against Arizona, but defensive end Trevor Pryce will sit out at least three weeks after undergoing surgery on his broken left wrist.
