A trio of musicals released by the Warner Archive Collection are guaranteed to put a song in your heart.
Most venerable of the lot is 1936’s “Show Boat,” based on the Jerome Kern – Oscar Hammerstein II show, which features the unforgettable sight and sound of Paul Robeson singing “Old Man River.”
Next comes “Broadway Melody of 1940,” which has Fred Astaire dancing not with Ginger Rogers but the energetic Eleanor Powell.
Finally, from 1955, is the Howard Keel/Ann Blyth “Kismet,” directed by Vincente Minnelli, the source of the classic “Stranger In Paradise.” Kismet indeed.
