Lionsgate has set a date for morphin’ time: “Power Rangers,” a big-screen reboot of the ‘90s TV smash, will hit theaters July 22, 2016.
Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (“X-Men: First Class”) wrote the script for the movie, which will reinvent the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” mythos about a colorful group of ordinary high-school kids who are given extraterrestrial superpowers and interconnecting giant robots to save the world.
Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Allison Shearmur and Roberto Orci are producing. Cast members and a director have yet to be named.
Like fellow ‘90s franchise “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” which returned to the big screen with a $65-million opening last weekend, “Power Rangers” represents a globally recognized brand that has spawned countless spinoffs and merchandising opportunities over the years.
Look for Lionsgate to try to parlay the property into another blockbuster series a la “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games.”
On its current date, “Power Rangers” is slated to open against Guy Ritchie’s take on “King Arthur” for Warner Bros.
