Profile
What does a successful producer do for a second act? If you’re Daryl Roth, the Pulitzer Prizewinning backer of Wit and Proof, you buy a Corinthian-columned bank (designed by the guy who built the Lincoln Memorial), carve out its cavernous interior, and convert it into an eponymous theater. De la guarda’s Villa, Villa, a hyperkinetic happening Roth co- produced, inaugurated the 350-seat theater in 1998 and ran there for nearly seven years. Since then, the Roth has been the home to productions ranging from Sandra Bernhard’s outsize cabaret shows to the play Almost, Maine, a collection of romantic vignettes. A second, more intimate venue, the DR2 Theatre, seats 99 in a converted parking garage behind the main building. More intimate still is the D-Lounge in the basement. There you can rub shoulders with artsy students and inhale comedy and cabaret acts performing on a Post-it-size stage.
