Profile

Architect Carlos Aparicio opened for business in 2001 with a mission to bring 20th century European furniture to a modern setting, both for education and for profit. He succeeds with BAC, a converted warehouse that feels more like a gallery than a retail store, arrayed with decades' worth of furniture, objets d'art, lighting, and rugs. The shop's high, white walls and huge wooden panels frame mahogany desks, blonde wood chairs and a near-sculptural collection of mid-century modern lamps. Shoppers who venture through the back room's gauzy curtains discover a trove of decorative accents and graceful urns, one-of-a-kind European cabinetry, and antique Swedish rugs. The low, upholstered Scandinavian and German couches that edge BAC's rooms are equally suited to a Calvin Klein commercial or a contemporary imagining of Sigmund Freud's study. Though the shop is jam-packed with Scandinavian wares, Aparicio's true passion is French furnitureartfully expressed in his handpicked selection of Parisian tables and chairs.
