Profile
Founded in 1900 by Russian immigrant Hyman Hendler, this venerable wholesale and retail shop is wall-to-wall ribbon, from cheap cotton grosgrain to luxurious, double-sided, silk tapestry binding, serving the needs of generations of fashion-district designers and rag-trade garmentos. Now run by Hyman’s son-in-law Michael Weisman, the ribbon-and-trim paradise feels more like a warehouse than an actual store: Overflowing cardboard boxes and stacked spools line the floors, with more bins and crates piled almost to the ceiling. With so many offerings, you can easily get distracted when looking for something specific, but, that’s when the sales team can step in to match patterns and fabrics since they know the enormous stock to a T. New ribbons and trims arrive regularly from France and elsewhere in Europe to satiate the store's eclectic clientele: designers, wedding planners, art directors, stylists and even Martha Stewart. Note: While Hyman Hendler & Sons stocks ribbons and trims like no other shop, that's all they've got; for buttons, zippers, appliqués or actual fabric, you’ll have to go elsewhere.
NoteSometimes they don't work on Saturdays so make sure to call ahead.
