In a neighborhood dotted with organic cafes and funky homegrown boutiques, this crafty hotspot seamlessly fell into the loop in 2003, when yoga and knitting aficionado Miriam Maltagliati opened her classroom-within-a-shop. Now, investment bankers, writers, and personal trainers wanting to de-stress saddle up to a community table where they learn to knit one, purl two under the tutelage of Maltagliati. Absent from this knitting sanctuary are the musty odor and senior citizen stigma of craft store giants like JoAnn Fabrics; instead, Knit New York resembles an art installation exhibit with a homey twist. Floor-to-ceiling rows of white cubbies display colorful metallic, mohair, alpaca, and chunky skeins of yarn, with Vogue knitting (and crochet) books and patterns for actual wearable pieceseven plus-sizefilling in the gaps. Novices and experts alike sign up for classes like Sox and Lox (which happen on Sundays). Yummy smells from the shop's organic cafe waft through the air, inviting knitters to rest their needles and refuel on H&H Bagels, chocolate scones, and homemade chai. Non-knitters have been known choose the soothing atmosphere as the backdrop for a good read, in lieu of a crowded Starbucks.
Payment NoteThere is a $20 minimum on all credit card transactions.
