Born in 1955 and raised in Detroit, Chinese-American clothing designer Anna Sui studied at New York's Parsons School of Design, where she was a contemporary of photographer Steven Meisel. Sui's involvement in fashion began at an early age, with a devotion to dressing her toy dolls and brothers' soldiers for her own personal version of the Academy Awards. Since her debut collection in April 1991, Sui has become renowned as a "sampler" of styles, finding inspiration in everything from Chanel suits to Haight Ashbury hippie chic to '70s glam rock. Sui's signature wit and original designs draw legions of devotees to her pieces, including clients Nicole Kidman, Drew Barrymore, Stevie Nicks, Sofia Coppola, Christina Ricci and Madonna.
