The Cut, New York Media’s site for women, took over this year’s Fall Fashion issue with a “flip” edition of New York Magazine. A regular issue featuring Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School graduate and anti-gun activist David Hogg on the cover flips over to actress Tessa Thompson and Fall Fashion by the Cut, its first issue in print. “It’s an experiment — like hanging a painting upside down and then deciding it looks interesting that way,” writes Stella Bugbee, president and editor-in-chief of the Cut, in her editor’s letter. Of Thompson, profiled by Allison P. Davis and photographed by Awol Erizku for the issue, Bugbee says: “The Cut is interested in any actress that can become a meme overnight, and Tessa Thompson has that internet-y quality, with the real acting chops to make her last.” Davis writes that Thompson “seems engineered for contemporary stardom, checking off several boxes at once: beautiful, a woman of color, sexually fluid, socially conscious, politically aware, using her social-media platform for good but also for our entertainment.”
This is not the first flip treatment for New York’s fashion issues: From 2006–2008 the magazine ran men’s and women’s flip covers, with Rachel Weisz and Justin Theroux on the first.
