Tipsheet: Choosing the Band

Before deciding on a band or D.J., make sure you:

• Consider the size of the reception venue—big spaces need big sound.

• Keep in mind that hiring one band can cut costs. Have two musicians play during the ceremony, add two for a cocktail-hour quartet, then get the full band to play for dinner and dancing.

• Listen to demos. If you hear one you like, ask: Are all the musicians still in the band? Is this a live recording (studio sound can be enhanced)?

• Make provisions for background music during breaks. Most bands come with a CD player, so if there’s something you really want to hear, bring it.

• Ask whether there’s an extra fee for continuous music.

• Find out if the D.J. will play your choices; inquire about the level of emceeing.

• Try to catch a performance before you make a commitment.
